Travel by ferry from Battery Park to Ellis Island and see the place over 12 million immigrants passed through before beginning life in America. From 1892 to 1954, Ellis Island processed immigrants coming into the United States. Today the island houses two modern theaters and 30 galleries of artifacts, photos, multimedia presentations and temporary exhibits.
Take a self-guided tour or one with a park ranger. Both tours deliver information in an anecdotal form, lending a personal bent to the stories. ''Ellis Island Stories'' gives another personal slant, as professional actors depict stories from the Ellis Island Oral History Archive.
Exhibits include the Baggage Room, the Peopling of America exhibit, the Registry Room and the American Wall of Honor - each illustrating another part of this moving story.
Ferries leave daily every 30 to 40 minutes from 9:15 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Tickets for both Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty can be purchase in Battery Park's Castle Clinton and include both transportation and admission.
