Brooklyn Bridge spans the East River between Brooklyn and Manhattan and is one of the most famous architectural landmarks in New York. At 6000 feet long, it was the longest suspension bridge in the world for a very long time.
The bridge was built from 1867 to 1883, conceived by John Augustus Roebling when inclement weather halted ferry service one winter. Building the bridge was difficult and not without danger. Roebling died two years into the construction and his son Washington was crippled after taking over. It took Washington's wife Emily to complete the job.
No one trusted that a woman could handle such a feat and it took a herd of elephants from a visiting circus walking across the bridge to convince people. Still people panicked and 12 were killed in a stampede that day.
Fortuntely, the bridge remain standing today - a symbol of determination and accomplishment.
