The legendary Apollo Theater in Harlem is located at 253 West 125th Street between 7th and 8th Avenues. Take a guided tour of the theater or take in the amateur performances on Wednesday nights. Other performances also take place and some of the most famous African American comedians and singers have graced the stage here.
The theater opened in 1913 to whites-only audiences with a burlesque show. It was bought by Sid Cohen in 1934 and has been hosting African American talent ever since, including the likes of Billie Holliday and Aretha Franklin.
Tours include the Wall of Fame in the lobby, the Tree of Hope and an oral history of the theater with audience participation encouraged. There is also a gift shop will Apollo-oriented souvenirs.
